Lesson 3: Turn around. My house is at the corner!!

  1. Understand instructions: Grasp the concept of giving step-by-step commands to computers or robots.
  2. Learn sequencing: Comprehend the importance of providing instructions in a specific order.
  3. Enhance logical thinking: Practice breaking down tasks, identifying patterns, and understanding cause and effect relationships.

Introduction:

Instructions are  a set of steps or directions that we give to a computer or robot. Just like following a recipe or game rules, the computer follows instructions to perform tasks. In “unplug coding,” imagine using arrows on a robot. Each arrow represents an instruction. By giving the robot a sequence of instructions in the right order, it follows them step by step.

When programming the robot, you press the arrows in a specific order. For example, if you want the robot to move forward, turn right, move forward again, and then stop, you press the forward arrow, then the right arrow, followed by another forward arrow, and finally the enter button. The robot reads and executes each instruction one by one, in the order you gave them. This way, you can control the robot’s actions by providing a series of instructions for it to follow.

“Unplug coding” teaches you about programming by using physical objects like toy robots and buttons. It helps you understand the importance of giving instructions in the correct order and how the computer or robot follows them step by step to perform tasks.

Dialogue:

Kid: (worried) Hello, please help! My kitty is stuck on the chimney at my house on 5 Government Street!
Dispatcher: Stay calm, help is on the way. I’ve sent the fire truck to your location. They’ll be there soon.
Kid: Thank you so much! Please make them come quickly!
Dispatcher: Absolutely. I’ll also give the fire truck a brief about the situation. They’ll go straight, turn left, and then go straight again. Your house is at the corner. They know exactly how to get there.
Kid: Okay, I’ll be waiting for them. Please tell them to hurry!
Dispatcher: They’re aware of the urgency. Stay strong, and keep an eye out for the fire truck. Help is on the way.
Kid: Thank you for your help!
Dispatcher: You’re welcome. Goodbye for now.
Kid: Goodbye, and thank you again!
